Returns policy – Customers are offered a 30-day money back guarantee on all internet purchases from this website*. The 30-day period commences upon the submission of your order, and Opals Down Under must be notified of your intention to return the product before this period ends. The customer will bear the cost of freight for the return, and goods must be received undamaged and in original condition (this includes the original packaging) before a refund will be issued. Transactions can only be refunded to the Credit Card, Bank account, PayPal account or Afterpay used for the original order.
*All tags must be attached (return tag attached to your item) for a refund to be provided.
*Please note – Returns Policy only applicable to Stock Jewellery and (unmodified) Unset Stones. Custom-made jewellery and Unset Opals cut for custom orders cannot be refunded.

All transactions including refunds are processed in Australian Dollars, therefore refunds may vary according to exchange rate fluctuation during the 30-day period. Opals Down Under is not responsible for any variation in currency exchange rates which result in a varied refund. Due to the policy of our eCommerce provider, refunds can take between 2 and 5 business days to process.
Security policy – Internet transactions are conducted via a digitally signed, secure SSL server. Your credit card details are kept highly secure and are not transmitted via email. The page which collects your credit card details is high-grade encrypted before being sent over the internet. This encryption makes it extremely difficult for unauthorised people to view information traveling between computers.
Authenticity of opals – All of our Opals come complete with a Certificate of Authenticity upon sale. This signed document contains a detailed analysis of your stone, such as origin, classification, weight, colours, and dimensions (shown in millimetres), and is an excellent record for valuation and insurance purposes.
Free delivery – For orders over AUD $300 ex GST (AU$330 inc GST), delivery is completely free of charge to anywhere in the world.* (Excluding South Africa, Italy & Indonesia. Due to security reasons, a private courier is required for these countries). Our opals are delivered promptly and insured against loss during delivery. Delivery to most countries is less than ten working days. More valuable items can be delivered via DHL International Courier (choose this item during checkout), while less expensive are delivered by Express insured Air Mail. Loss during delivery – All parcels sent by Opals Down Under are insured against loss, theft, or damage during delivery. You do not take any risk in purchasing from us, as your parcel is completely covered. In the case that your Opal does become lost in transit, we will reimburse you fully the purchase price of the item. Therefore you need not be concerned about the security of your Opal during transit. All parcels sent by us also require a signature upon delivery.
GST & prices – GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a value-added tax of 10% added on most goods and services transactions in Australia. Prices on our website are shown in both inclusive and exclusive GST prices. If you are an overseas customer, you do not need to pay this tax. Exported goods are tax-free and not subject to Australia’s GST. Opals Down Under passes this benefit onto our international customers and internet purchases shipped overseas are accordingly tax-free. Customers who reside in Australia however will be charged this tax at the rate of ten per cent. Please select the correct tax bracket when submitting your order.
Lay-by/Lay-away – Yes, we do accept lay-by/lay-aways. Terms are 6 to 8 weeks, 20% minimum deposit. If the buyer cancels the Lay-By, a 20% termination fee of the total item price will be charged. If a payment is not made for 6 (six) months your item/s will be placed back into stock for public sale. Please note, we only accept lay-by/lay-away orders for unset stones and already set pieces. We do not allow lay-by/lay-away for Custom Settings (these need to be paid in full). Please contact us for further information.
Lay-bys need to be completed in full before we release the item.
We do also accept Afterpay online & in store.
Photography of opals – We take care in trying to portray the opals and opal jewellery as realistically as we possibly can, and have spent many years improving our techniques and equipment. We feel we hope to show our opals in the best light possible (we also display our opals and opal jewellery next to a ruler, showing inches, to compliment the measurement in millimetres mentioned in the description). Our opals are photographed using a lightbox that diffuses light, however, if you would like to see the opals in natural sunlight, please do contact us asking so. Measurements given in the description are for the opals only.
Custom Jewellery Settings – We work with three Queensland-based jewellers with extensive experience in creating outstanding Opal jewellery. We’re with you every step of the way, from Opal choice and initial concept, through to design and completion. Custom settings take 4 to 5 weeks to complete (during non busy holiday periods). The unset opal is required to be paid in full before work commences. Your deposit is equal to the value of the Opal. We do not require payment for the setting until it has been completed. The client agrees to fully pay out the agreed value of the dollar ($) amount owing for the ordered custom setting in full, at date of pick up/ completion.
Deposits for custom settings are non refundable. Failure to meet this agreement will result in a loss of deposit for the client.
We quality check our Opals before and after the setting process. The finished settings are checked thoroughly, and photographed for the Certificate of Authenticity. If, on the chance there is a manufacturing issue with the setting, we ask that the item is returned to us so we can correct the issue. We do not replace Opals and/or settings that have been damaged through negligence/lack of care.
Currency rates – US dollar and other international currency values displayed in our catalogue are to be used as a guide only and their accuracy is not guaranteed. Orders are processed in Australian dollars. For a more accurate estimation use our pop-up currency converter or visit the XE website.
Privacy policy – We do not pass on any of your contact details to any third party whatsoever. Your personal details are kept highly confidential.
Taxes – In our experience, it is rare for import taxes to be imposed by your home country. However, it is still possible that customers may be liable to pay import taxes imposed by their government upon arrival of their goods. This differs from country to country and we have no control over which taxes may be charged. In the case of a refund, the customer must bear all costs associated with import taxes as it is not possible for Opals Down Under to refund this amount or other costs associated with importing goods. Customers should research their country’s import tax policies prior to making a purchase. (For example, UK customs may charge up to 33% of the items value in Customs Duty + Import VAT + Clearance Fees)
Order processing & conversion rates – Internet transactions are conducted in Australian Dollars ($AUD). Conversions into the customer’s own currency are conducted by the financial institution of the customer and final prices in the customer’s currency will vary according to the exchange rate on the day.
Currency converter – Opals Down Under provides a link to a currency conversion facility so that users may obtain an estimate of prices in other currencies, however we are not liable or responsible in any way for costs, errors, losses or incorrect currency information displayed by this third party website. Ring resizing – If you require a ring re-size, please note that there can be up to one to two week’s turn around on this request. Please note, for re-sizing larger or smaller than standard Australian sizes displayed, there will be an additional surcharge. We suggest contacting us prior to ordering for a quote. Resizes UP or DOWN will be AU$40 (+ GST if applicable) per size.
